Peacock cichlids (genus Aulonocara) are freshwater African cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, widely celebrated by hobbyists for their shimmering, metallic coloration that rivals marine reef fish. Growing to an average adult size of 4 to 6 inches, they have a lifespan of 6 to 10 years and are prized for being significantly more peaceful than other African cichlid groups, such as rock-dwelling Mbunas.
